1. Back up regularly

Regularity is the key to effective backup. The faster your data changes, the more frequently you need to back it up.

A company that processes critical data continuously may opt for a daily backup, while a less active structure may be happy with a weekly backup. The aim is to minimise the potential loss of data in the event of an incident.

2. Follow the 3-2-1 rule

The 3-2-1 rule is a tried and tested standard. Keep three copies of your data: the original and two copies.

Make sure that these copies are distributed over two different types of media (for example, local hard disks and magnetic tapes, or network storage). Last but not least, store at least one of these copies in another geographical locationOutside your premises, to protect you against local disasters (fire, flooding, burglary).

Make sure that your back-ups and their storage meet these legal requirements, in terms of personal data protection, retention, traceability and security.

10. Develop and test a disaster recovery plan (DRP)

A good backup policy is part of a wider business continuity approach.

The PRS sets out the actions to be taken to recover data and restart services after a major incident (cyber attack, hardware failure, natural disaster).

Test this plan regularly to identify any flaws, reduce downtime and ensure rapid and effective recovery in the event of a crisis.
